Short-Term Running Goals:

My short term goals are simple for now...I just want to get back into a consistent running routine. My focus is not directed toward distance, speed, or racing. My primary focus is motivation, consistency, endurance, and education on running in general.

My health and exercise goals for July-August

  • run 4-5 days a week.
  • read up on breathing while running (assuming there are do's and don’ts) + other running education
  • weight training, 3 days a week
  • update my progress on the fast running blog so my sister-in-law can keep me in check.

Long-Term Running Goals:

I want to run a half marathon as well as a marathon.  That goal seems far away… but I’ve got to start somewhere.

Personal:

I am married to a great guy, his name is Bam (It’s really Brandon, but he is a drummer and has gone by Bam since he was a kid.) We live in Daybreak, UT with our 3 awesome kids.

Our youngest will be 8 in October, and he is a natural at every sport he’s involved with. Which is about every sport. Currently he sports a Mohawk, and thinks he’s pretty cool. He’s right, he is cool, and he has a funny laugh that makes you laugh just listening to it.

Our middle kid’o turned 8 in April, and she will be in 3rd grade this year. She is tall and beautiful! She loves tumbling, and playing outside with her friends, and brothers. She loves to watch the Discovery channel, and loves learning anything she can about animals.

Our oldest son will be 10 in October. He is a great basketball, and soccer player. This will be his first year in football, and I am nervous for him (he is a tall, very skinny, good looking kid) but we will see how it goes. Our oldest is defiantly the “gamer” and the only one we have to give time limits to when it comes to videogames.

My husband is a heavy rescue firefighter paramedic. When he’s not working he is probably on a mountain somewhere. Bam loves mountain biking, and does long technical stuff that I don’t get involved with. He has been a big motivator for me to get back into running, and exercising in general. Bam is always the life of the party, he sings, plays the guitar, and is really fun to be around. He is not just my husband but truly my best friend.

I run a furniture store in the downtown Salt Lake area, which is a full time job. I love architecture, design, furniture, hats, jeans, and being outside. I went back to school a year ago and I am on track for a bachelor’s degree in health science (nursing).  School and work take up a lot of my time. However, my favorite thing to do is just hang with my family.

Even though I am an active person I feel like I’m starting at the beginning as far as being in shape and running go. I’m excited for the day when I don’t feel like that anymore.

Noticing that my comments from my calender show on my blog page. rad & embarrassing.

You'll get it sorted out in no time...

Welcome to the blog! I notice you are interested in running books. May I suggest my favorites? Programmed to Run by Miller has info about breathing that I found helpful. Just finished Born To Run by McDougall -- fantastic book! Also love Switzer's Marathon Woman (more about women's running than marathons, and very entertaining). Happy running!

longest run I have done so far... my husband came with me (he was on his bike).  I ran  closer to 5 miles but my runkeeper switched off twice, bummer! Figure I'll just count the miles I could trak. I must have been bit by something around the lake while running because when we got home I was covered in hives, and my eyes got all puffy. Thankfully it was my day off...now I'm just wondering what got to me on my run.

Congrats on the miles today. Record the miles you think you run, not just the ones that registered. You earned them, record them. That's my opinion.

My wife is getting back into running after taking a few years off to have kinds. She is also a full-time Nursing student at the U. Its amazing how she juggles everything. Good luck and welcome.

Nice miles! I agree, you need to write down what you really ran, watches do funny things some times. That's crazy about the hives!! Hope you get that worked out.

Ran while my daughter was in her tumbling class... had to cut my run short by 1 mile, but no crazy hives or allergies after todays run which was a bonus. Also,  I didnt get my basement set up for my P90X dvds. I guess Ill try and get that done this week.

I'm starting to feel better during my runs, and even though its only been a couple weeks of running on a regular basis...I can feel the need to run instead of making myself go. This is an exciting feeling!

I was smiling while I ran today.  I can tell that running is becoming something I no longer feel like I force myself to do. It’s becoming routine… slowly but surely. My left foot has been giving me problems for a few days now( Mainly in the arch of my foot) I have appropriate insoles for my shoes so I am really counting on this pain in my foot to be short lived, and I’ll look into it more  if it does not go away  by next week.

Good job!!! Your miles are really increasing! It must be getting easier. How's th arch pain? Sorry I still haven't called you. Crazy days lately! took anna to her kindergarten testing and they told me she should be in 1st grade so I spent the day running around like a crazy person getting her uniforms and supplies for school tomorrow!

Realizing it may not be the arch of my foot that’s bothering me… hu. Guess I’ll look into but I don’t want to let a minor amount of “beginners running pain” get in the way of my consistence. Ate a bunch of bugs tonight on my run which means I may be breathing to hard (had my mouth open while running by the lake) …better go get some of those runners’ education books.

Its official my ankle is swollen…DARN… maybe I just need to invest in some better running shoes??? I only inhaled one gnat tonight as I have decided running around a lake in the evening is not the best idea, but beautiful none the less.

Wow, felt like a long run today...maybe that was due to the busy route I chose. When I got home my GPS told me I had gone 46 miles!! Not bad for a newbe runner I thought to myself, but had to laugh at my runkeepers technical difficulties. So, I went back and traced my run the best I could with my car.

My mile pace is hovering just under 10min/mile. Also, I am battling ankle pain still but have decided to get a new pair of shoes in the coming week. I'm sure the purchase of better shoes will solve the small problem I'm having with my foot.

Great job!!! How are the goals for July and August going so far??

From B on Mon, Aug 24, 2009 at 19:29:56 from 76.27.69.159

thanks! My goals are really coming along,I have been surprised by myself a little to be honest. I'm still so young to running (and the blog) that sometimes I feel silly entering in my low miles. I have been doing a lot of reading online, and I have been doing abs which I always forget to mention in my posts. Its almost time to reevaluate my goals...cant wait. Hey thanks a lot for asking!

From Kelli on Mon, Aug 24, 2009 at 19:33:16 from 71.219.64.200

A mile is a mile, they all count! And ab work is apparently very important to running, something I just learned myself. I hate working my abs because I can not see them so why bother???

where do you meet?

From Kelli on Mon, Aug 24, 2009 at 19:57:25 from 71.219.64.200

Different places every time...Bingham high school, random churches throughout S Jordan and Riverton, the JRP, and others. I have not gone in so long due to injury that I can not remember!!! We meet at 5:30 for 3 easy miles, then do a workout for an hour (speedwork, hills, tempo runs, whatever) then another 2-3 easy miles. You can come for all or part of it. Not many stay for the last part, about half come for the first part. But during the main workout there are as many as 15-20 people. We may be switching the start ime to 5:15 now that school has started.

I am defiantly allergic to something in my neighborhood. I got back from my run and immediately I could feel my nasal passages swelling shut all the way to the back of my throat, and I was covered in hives. Also my eyes were itching like crazy, my right one almost completely swollen shut! I’m going to look on my GPS and see if I can single out a street or area taking into account the route I took the last time this happened. So very strange this is…

Its monday the 28 and I am just getting around to entering my run I did on the 23rd!! I got an arm band for my iphone. I cant believe how nice it is to run with the arm band. I also noticed my running times have improved a ton. I'm maintaining an avarage of 8.56 min/mile for the majority of my run... I have had a real nasty cold/flu and it has put me out the last 5 days (inc.today). I'm going to Moab on wed and I was hoping to get some nice runs in down there, so I hope I can kick this thing before I head down.

Hi. Yeah, it is good back to get back to an exercise routine. Are you still running? My goals are similar to yours, primarily to get back on a consistent every other day running routine.

I was kind of in a running "drought" for 2-3 months because I didn't have the time in the morning to warm-up, run 4-5 miles, then cool down & stretch. So, . . . I ended up not running much at all! But, the day after Christmas I decided that a short run is better than no run at all, and that mindset has helped me get back in the running groove.

Good luck with your running; it's hard with kids, work, home, school, . . .

PS: A good book to answer your breathing questions is "The Complete Book of Running for Women" by Claire Kowalchik (1999).

Good luck with your goals for 2010!
